Today, Hyundai revealed its innovative Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This fresh concept reflects a completely new interpretation of truck utility for a new generation of buyers, especially Millennials, who represent the second-largest population of car buyers.

“The Santa Cruz crossover truck concept meets the unspoken needs of a growing Millennial lifestyle we call ‘Urban Adventurers’,” said Mark Dipko, director, corporate planning, Hyundai Motor America. “This new crossover allows them all the expandable utility they need throughout their active week, from work-life professionalism, to social interests, to a whole variety of outdoor pursuits, without the typical compromises they have come to expect from the industry’s current product offerings.”


Modern urbanization is impacting the market in a broad way, and this trend is especially strong with young adults, who face tighter parking on streets and parking garages, and increasing congestion overall. These trends are not confined to one specific region of the U.S.; they’re happening in urban hubs everywhere. These “Urban Adventurers” have a different mindset, being very active both socially, and in their communities, bringing a pioneering spirit to make their neighborhoods a better place to live and work.

So whether it’s loading up friends and firewood for a bonfire at the beach, coaching the youth soccer team, volunteering for a community restoration project, or a quick drop-off at the local recycling center, they need a vehicle versatile enough to accommodate both passengers and gear, while being efficient enough to fit into their unique urban lifestyle.


To meet the specific needs of these Urban Adventurers, Santa Cruz doesn’t focus on all the same attributes as traditional pickups. It’s designed to meet more of their desires for expression, efficiency and maneuverability. Hyundai designers created a bold design that conveys this lifestyle, with a wide, sure-footed stance and an aggressive side-profile rake. The front view features an upright, hexagonal grille with cascading lines framing the sides, dual lens-free, honeycombed headlamp projectors, and prominent LED fog lamps. The side profile is highlighted by oversized wheels, Michelin® tires with a special tread design, center-locking hubs and yellow Brembo® brake calipers.

For ease of access to the rear seats, Santa Cruz features convenient, rear-hinged rear doors which integrate seamlessly with the front door design. The wheel arches, roof, and bed rails offer convenient tie-down cleats for securing cargo of all shapes and sizes. From the rear, the concept presents highly-contoured bed forms, and for extra utility, the expandable bed can be easily reconfigured for longer cargo, using a unique drawer-like sliding function.

Efficiency is a key attribute of its advanced powertrains, with an environmentally-friendly 2.0-liter turbo diesel powertrain delivering 190 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque, while achieving fuel economy in the high 30 mpg range. Santa Cruz also offers Hyundai’s HTRAC® All-wheel drive system, so there’s no anxiety about getting those snowboarding “fresh tracks” right after a storm moves through.

The concept is purposefully compact, and although it has four doors and seating for five, its overall footprint is similar to a small CUV. These dimensions make it ideal for navigating the urban jungle or a tight parking spot that most pickup drivers often have to pass by. It offers typical CUV driving character, but with a versatile cargo bed that provides separated storage for all they want to bring along, whether it’s a trip to the recycling center, a surf or paddleboard session, or a couple of mountain bikes for the trails. Whatever the day’s activity might bring -- all that dirty, sweaty, wet, sandy, bulky gear remains in the back of the truck, cleanly separated from the passenger compartment.

During the work week, gear for that early morning hike or after-work hockey game stays securely locked in the back, under an integrated, rigid tonneau cover that conveniently retracts when not needed. Hyundai research revealed that not everyone who wants an open-bed vehicle is willing to accept the tradeoffs that come with it. As evidence of this, industry pickup truck share is down over five percent in the last 10 years, with the biggest shift among young adults, reflecting a need for something that more closely matches these morphing lifestyles. In the past, small trucks accounted for half of pickup sales, and they were particularly popular with younger buyers. Today, that same young truck market is almost non-existent, and millennials under 30 represent just seven percent of all pickup purchases. Women, who buy more than half of all CUVs sold, now account for only 10 percent of pickup sales. Santa Cruz is intended to meet the customer needs that the current truck product offering is simply not fulfilling.

2018 Hyundai Santa Cruz – A while ago Hyundai showcased a very interesting concept with the Santa Cruz pickup truck. At the time it was nothing more than just a truck to showcase their idea. This type of design was used before by Honda with their Ridgeline but Honda never said such thing.

Despite looking quite similar to each other and using the same type of design, the two trucks were quite different. The Santa Cruz would provide better on-road performance, great features and a really comfortable interior. However, being nothing but a concept people forgot about it… until now. More recently Hyundai released a statement which confirmed the 2018 Hyundai Santa Cruz as a production model.

2018 Hyundai Santa Cruz Release Date and Price

So far not much has been said about it and the concept is the only real piece of information about the truck. The production model will likely follow its design quite closely but also expect some upgrades over the original concept. Hyundai’s CEO in the US said that the Santa Cruz will likely arrive in 2018 and when it will arrive, it will be the first of its kind. Over its unique design, the truck is also expected to have other unique features inside and out which will make it quite special.

At this point it seems it might get to use the same platform that can be found in the long-wheelbase Santa Fe. Like the crossover, the 2018 Hyundai Santa Cruz is expected to feature front wheel drive, a rather low ground clearance and great interior equipment. The price hasn’t been revealed but most seem to expect it at around $25,000. This would be considerably less than its closest rival, the Ridgeline.


The concept truck for the Santa Cruz featured a really striking design which is unlikely to go unchanged in production. The concept features an extended cab which may actually go into production as a sports truck. A crew cab model with four full-size doors and more room inside is also a real possibility. The two might actually use the same platform with the difference being the extended cab version would get a different design for its cab and bed to be more striking to look at. The other version, on the other hand, would be the competitor for all the other regular trucks on the market. In the front we expect it to be quite close to its crossover sibling with the difference being the bumper. The back will be all new with a full-size bed and possibly a hatch to allow the bed to extend into the cabin.

It won’t be official until the Los Angeles or Detroit auto show, but Hyundai is poised to add the Santa Cruz pickup to its lineup in 2018 as a 2019 model.

“We have made the decision,” Dave Zuchowski, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, said. “We have not made the announcement.”

He said Hyundai is working on the lifestyle pickup, which would share a platform with the Tucson compact crossover. The car-based pickup—of the same ilk as the Honda Ridegline or discontinued Subaru Baja—went for design review in early August, and the automaker is close to locking in the final design.

The final truck could have either a gasoline or a diesel engine. Hyundai is developing a four-cylinder diesel engine to introduce the new Genesis luxury brand in Europe in a few years, and Zuchowski said he sees the new Santa Cruz and the full-size Santa Fe as candidates for the diesel in the U.S.

Internal studies suggest Hyundai could sell about 50,000 Santa Cruz pickups a year, and external studies put the figure as high as 70,000. The CEO said sales in that range “makes sense for us.”

The idea of a car-based pickup has been tried by others with varying degrees of success. Honda has a nice following and just introduced the second-generation Ridgeline after a two-year hiatus. But the Baja was discontinued in 2006, and other automakers, including Fiat Chrysler, have talked about a similar vehicle, but none have come to market. Regular body-on-frame compact pickups have enjoyed a resurgence, with GM getting back into the segment with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, Ford preparing to bring back the Ranger, and Jeep bringing back a Wrangler pickup.

Zuchowski sees potential for a lifestyle pickup if it is executed and priced properly. The Santa Cruz concept shown at the 2015 North American International Auto Show is a crossover with an expandable bed for the buyer who in the past has bought more truck than really needed. Pricing would start about $25,000.

Zuchowski was hoping the Santa Cruz announcement could have been made earlier this year when Hyundai announced it was expanding truck production at its plant in Montgomery, Ala., to add the Santa Fe Sport. “It would have been a good time to announce another truck to show we’re correcting our adverse mix,” he said, referring to the fact that 62 percent of total industry U.S. sales are trucks and SUVs but are only 25 percent of Hyundai’s sales. Within the next four years the automaker expects to have a 45 percent truck mix through a combination of new products and production changes.

One part of rectifying the bad product mix is to remove 50,000 units of Sonata and Elantra car capacity in Montgomery and replace it with the Santa Fe Sport, which is also made at a Kia plant in West Point, Ga.

But the company was not ready to make the Santa Cruz announcement in June, Zuchowski said.

Nor is it decided where the Santa Cruz will be made. Possibilities include the Montgomery plant, which has the flexibility to add a fourth vehicle; Kia’s new plant in Mexico, which has not determined how all the capacity will be used; or it could be built in Korea with a phasing out of the 25-percent “chicken tax” on light truck imports by 2021.

Well, you’ll have to ask Hyundai about it. Now let’s just get one thing straight here: the Santa Cruz isn’t actually getting built, these are just rumors that it might. Hyundai has recently said that making a pickup truck in today’s market and with today’s gas prices is economically not profitable but has since switched their minds regarding it to at least consider this option. And to be perfectly honest, why shouldn’t they make one?

Reasons behind building a pickup

If Korean cars have taught us anything in the past couple of years, it’s that American and European models are not as good as they were and that other manufacturers are gaining on them. The Koreans are building cars which are on par with all of their competitors and in certain occasions, they’re beating them. Take the small car segment for instance. Go to Europe, and you’ll see a million of small Korean cars congesting the city. America has a lot of sedans and luxury cars from that country, and it’s the same story with Japan. Hyundai and Kia have both recognized what their strong points are and they’re sticking to it.

Speaking of Kia, they have also announced that they will be releasing a pickup should Hyundai make one. Whether it will be called the Sportage SUV, Soulster or KCV4 Mojave, we still don’t know. The duo is expected to release at least one model in this segment before 2018 (sometime in 2017), but there’s no official date just yet. The plan is simple: create a double-cab pickup which will be more luxurious and modern than something like the Hilux or the L200 (both of which are utilitarian workhorses).

Exterior Design

The design of the Santa Cruz is striking, to say the least. Although it’s just a concept and the final product (should it go into production) will be a lot different, it has been greeted with a lot of positive feedback from both visitors as well as automotive journalists.

David Zuchowski, President of Hyundai U.S., approved the design himself but obviously, approving it is one thing, building it is another. Expect the final version to be toned down significantly, especially the sharp edges and massive chin, as well as the wheels. But, the main styling cues and features should remain unchanged, keeping the final vehicle as true to the concept as it can be.

Interior design

Obviously, the biggest problem with older Korean cars has been the interior. The materials were the worst, and the build quality was poor, to say the least. You don’t even have to go far back to find evidence of this. Go back some 15 years, and you’ll see what we mean. As time went on, however, and in particular in the recent 4-5 years, the Koreans have caught up with the best what the rest of the world has to offer. Long gone are the hard plastics and the shoddy build quality.

You’ll find premium leather and nice accents in almost every cabin now. The build quality is superb. You get the feeling that the interior can withstand almost anything, which it probably can. Being a rather large pickup, expect it to have ample amount of headroom and legroom. Cargo space should be massive too, especially with that large bed in the back. Who would have thought? A really handsome Hyundai truck which is not a utilitarian workhorse, but rather a car for the road which can be used every single day. Well done Hyundai.

2019 Hyundai Santa Cruz Drivetrain

The hood will likely hide the same engines as the Santa Fe or the Tucson. This means that you get a rather large choice of engines, starting with a 1.6-liter turbocharged T-GDI four-cylinder with 177 hp and 195 pound-feet of torque. The naturally aspirated version of the same 1.6-liter unit develops 132 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque. The new 2.0 MPI with 150 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque is expected to make an appearance as well. Covering the diesel front is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant developing 185 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. If you want maximum performance, weirdly, you should go for the diesel. Yes, it’s heavier than the 1.6 T, but it’s got more hp as well as 100 more on torque figure. It’s not just more capable in terms of pulling and off-roading, but more capable full stop.

Power will be sent to the front wheels in standard form (probably), with the option to have an all-wheel drive system fitted at an extra cost of course. The engines will be mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard with a six-speed auto one as an optional. No exact words on estimated performance figures or economy but it should do 62 mph in around 8-9 seconds and return 25mpg on average across the entire range.

Release date and Price

As we mentioned before 2019 Hyundai Santa Cruz is expected to hit the showrooms by the end of 2018. It would come to us as the 2019 MY, and we should be seeing them on the streets by the beginning of 2019. From this point of view, all of this seems pretty far away, but it should be wort the wait. As for the price, noting is official by now, because of the mystery that surrounds the final product. Starting estimations vary from $25,000 to $32,000, which should put into competition with Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado.
